Just as in Islam, what people choose to do in the "name of god", is NOT the same as the "word" that was provided..

The Crusades were conducted for "earthly" reasons, having little to do with God, or "defending the faith". It was about money, power, and what to do with a surplus of young and capable knights.

And IMO, this is the same thing the Jihadists are fighting over.
