Ok, I'll give you that. 'Media' is an overloaded term, and can include any source of information.

What I should have said was the 'press', 'journalists', or the 'fourth estate'. I believe this group has more function that simply reporting the news. They have the responsibility of ensuring that the public gets the story of what is really going on. This responsibility is a critical check-and-balance against the very events we are experiencing today.

If the press did not break the story on Bush's eavesdropping, the story might never have come to light. Such abuse of power must be at least scrutinized, brought to light, debated, and weighed on its merits - not possible if kept in a dark closet. Liberties are hard fought treasures; the theft of these treasures must be exposed.

Like it or not, for a majority of the population, civics is tough. People don't have the time, or inclination, or knowledge, to pay attention when there is so much spin by the participants. These people rely on the press to strip away the spin and present the hard core. When the press changes from a mission of extracting the truth to a mission of presenting all the spinning sides, we've lost a vital civics resource.

Bush is being given a free ride compared to Clinton. Clinton lied about having an affair. Just yesterday, the Bush administration was potentially caught in three lies that have an actual impact on our safety and liberty:

1) Cheney releasing classified information for petty political gain - may qualify as treason.

2) Bush lying about his relationship and knowledge of a key participation in a huge political corruption scandal.

3) The White House lying about knowledge of what was really going on in the early phase of the Katrina disaster.

It is almost comical to compare the seriousness of each of the above to Clinton's sex scandal. Yet, millions of lines of press was devoted to the Clinton sexcapades, whereas there is only scant passing notice of the above huge stories.

Who's not paying attention?

Ex-CIA Official Says Bush Cherry-Picked WMD Intel
washingtonpost.com

This is why Pat Roberts in the senate has been trying to stop any investigation into the manipulation of pre-war intelligence. Because Bush-Cheney did lie, did attempt to deceive the public and used the whole fiction to get us into a quagmire war and brand political opponents (who turned out to be right) as "traitors".

>>>Anyone who thinks this is true, "Bush is being given a free ride" isn't paying attention or is pushing their own agenda.<<<

I'm surprised you don't think Bush got a "free ride" from the media while moving on to the war in Iraq.
