Were there any people out searching for what was wrong with the levys between 9:27 PM and daylight?????? There were people who used to live there, and they were reporting the breaches and the water coming in. I guess since this is a political thread we have no choice but to view these matters from a political point of view. We knew at the time -- I complained about it -- that when New Orleans was flooding, Bush was on the west coast giving speeches and Condi Rice was buying thousands of dollars worth of shoes at Ferragamo and attending Spamalot, where she was roundly booed for the 2005 equivalent of fiddling while Rome burns. Bush knew and didn't care. He thought someone else was in charge. Everybody in the Bush administration thought someone else was in charge. I remember what other Presidents did, other administrations did. Nixon, etc. They took charge. That's why we have presidents. They aren't speech-givers in chief, they're commanders in chief. I am tired of the blame-assigning but equally tired of the blame-evading. It's 5 1/2 months later and there's been almost zero progress. You don't have to believe me. Believe Trent Lott. Why did "things go better" for the Florida hurricanes? Because they were almost entirely wind damage, not water damage. Water damage is a completely different thing. Ask the people who got hit by the tsunami. Compared to getting hit by a tsunami, a tornado is nothing. It would help if you understood the underwater geology of the offshore region. Where the offshore water is shallow, the storm surges rise up high. Like a tidal wave after an earthquake. If Seattle ever gets hit by a tsunami, you'll know the difference between that and a tornado, I promise you.

Karen, When the republican congressional leadership has given up on rescuing the Bush administration from these claims of dropping the Katrina ball, it strikes me it's time to simply let it be. Somewhere, we are going to learn, between Michael Brown's testimony about the 9:27 time and the time the Bush WH folk claim to have been aware of the levee leak, there were serious, very serious communication problems. Someone(s) is clearly trying to do heavy cya. But the real problem is not that. The real problem is the creation and maintenance of a first rate professionally organized and supported FEMA.
