Louisiana used to be one of the richest states in the Union. Of course, that was before the Civil War, when "cotton was king."

Louisiana could have been oil-rich, if the politicians had played their cards right. Where do you think the bribe money comes from? Used to be mostly about oil. Now, gambling, too.

Well, there's little stuff like prostitution and drugs but that's chicken feed next to oil.

Could have had good schools, good roads, which would have meant good industry, like other places in the South like Virginia and Georgia -- but the establishment in NOLA doesn't want New Orleans to be like Atlanta or Raleigh-Durham or Northern VA. They want to smoke fine cigars and drink fine wine and dream in peace and quiet. Opium dreams.
