A 10 kWh unit contains the approximate power and energy to support an average size household for several hours. The system will be validated at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks's Arctic Energy Technology Development Laboratory, prior to being installed at a long-term field trial location where it will be operated by the National Park Service. Dennis Witmer, laboratory director, said: "We believe the VRB technology offers unique advantages for improving off-grid power system operations. This installation will provide significant field test experience for the system in the tough Alaskan environment, and potentially open the door for its deployment in other applications such as wind-hybrid systems." Tim Hennessy, chief executive officer of VRB Power, said: "We are pleased with this initial sale in Alaska which is a key area in our target market in remote area power supply (RAPS) applications and complements our earlier announced sales in Australia and Germany. We are delighted at the opportunity to showcase our technology in this high-profile application." "With NREL's HOMER software program indicating the suitability of VRB Power's technology in a significant number of RAPS applications, especially those with diesel-based generation, regions such as Alaska are key markets for the company. Operations in an extreme environment like this will demonstrate the flexibility of the VRB-ESS. We believe that the validating of this unit, both with the University of Alaska and the National Park Service, will lead to the acceptance of our technology and will support our ongoing sales initiatives of remote area power systems in Alaska and worldwide. This unit is expected to ship in the April time frame," concluded Mr. Hennessy. © 2006 Canjex Publishing Ltd.
