Expert: 'Iraq war was a gift for al-Qaeda'

Last Modified: 15 Feb 2006
Source: ITN

A security expert has described the Iraq war as a gift for al-Qaeda, providing them with the perfect urban terrorist training ground.

Professor Paul Rogers told delegates at the Royal United Services Institute that the consequences of creating such a theatre for terrorists to hone their skills would "haunt us over the next 20 to 30 years".

He told the conference on politics and terrorism: "Iraq is very slowly becoming something of a Jihadist training zone for a new generation of Jihadists, rather like Afghanistan was in the 1980s against the Soviets.

"You get young Jihadists from Afghanistan travelling to Iraq, getting combats training against the American troops in urban environments and then taking their skills elsewhere."

Prof Rogers, from the Department of Peace Studies at Bradford University, added: "The real gift to al-Qaeda is a long-term urban combat training zone, not a rural one as previously.

"That is going to come back and haunt us over the next 20 to 30 years."

The two-day conference in Whitehall is due to hear from other experts on Islam and counter-terrorism, as well as Home Office minister Hazel Blears.

Paramount to release Gore's global warming film Tue Feb 14, 6:03 PM ET

The producers of a global warming documentary starring former Vice President Al Gore have landed a worldwide distribution deal with Paramount Pictures' specialty label, the Viacom Inc.-owned studio said on Tuesday.

"An Inconvenient Truth," profiling Gore's campaign to raise awareness about the links between carbon emissions and climate change and making his case for what should be done about it, will open in U.S. theaters on May 26, Paramount said.

The release schedule for other territories has not been decided, a studio spokeswoman said.

The 95-minute film, which grew out of Gore's lecture circuit PowerPoint presentation on global warming, premiered to favorable reviews last month at the Sundance Film Festival.

The documentary is directed by Davis Guggenheim, whose credits also include the HBO western "Deadwood," the FX cop show "The Shield" and the public television production "The First Year."

Executive producers include Laurie David, the wife of actor-producer Larry David, the star of HBO comedy "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

The production company behind the film, Participant Productions, also produced politically based films "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "Syriana."

The commercial opening of the film in May will coincide with release of the book version of "An Inconvenient Truth," as a follow-up to the former Democratic presidential nominee's 1992 bestseller "Earth in the Balance," from Rodale Books.

As a TAX PAYING AMERICAN CITIZEN I agree. I wish we could start NATIONALLY a petition to have Gore brought up on some type of charges. If nothing else maybe it would make him uncomfortable and show the world he DOES NOT speak for AMERICA. jdn
