The negative results were the widespread international news items showing the US as torturers, kidnappers and masters of an offshore jail where we won't permit even the Red Cross to meet alone with the prisoners. In the name of safety, the administration has destroyed many decades of US credibility as a leading voice on human rights. Some might call that tenor but in the world of public diplomacy I used to inhabit it is a very tangible result with serious consequences for America in international fora, the media, bilateral negotiations with many governments, business deals and who knows where else.
