There will come a point when the Iraqi security forces are strong, as well as professional, enough to preserve good societal order.

That presupposes an effective and united government, which I'm becoming daily less convinced of. From the way things are going it will be 6 months after the election before the new government is really operational, and likely 6 months later it will have fallen apart.

I don't actually think we will get a clear request to leave. Once the Shiites get effect control of a reasonable military, they will be ready to see us leave, but at that point the troublesome Sunnis will no doubt decide they'ed like us to hang around, while not actually agreeing not to take pot shots at us. The Kurds will generally like us to temper the Shiites, so they'ed prefer we stay.

I think we are stuck.

Meanwhile by early next month we'll cruise through 2300 dead or our way towards 3K early next year. Ed is correct to point out that one should consider whether these deaths are helping or hurting the situation in Iraq.
