Now we are back to sheltering our kids from everything - since real life is devoid of sex, violence, conflict, upsetting scenes, jarring events and physical risks, we should do all we can to make sure our kids are wondrously oblivious to it all....until they cross an arbitrary age threshold and we expect them to deal with it all as mature adults. Inexperienced adults, of course.

Maybe there is more sex on television. Perhaps it’s more important that there’s more of everything.

The advent of cable TV was the allowing technology for demographically-targeted "news".

Of course, it has also made possible the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, C-SPAN and many other worthy nichecasts.

Fairly standard situation for newer technologies, I suppose.
