Does the current material left behind by the harvesting have any benefits to the soil ? I would imagine soil depletion would result quite a bit more rapidly under that scheme, no ?

What about the hidden costs of oil dependency?Huge military outlays to "defend" the mid east oil fields,the huge navy to keep the shipping lanes open,the huge costs of military alliances with hated regimes.The trade imbalance.And all the related things I haven't thought of..pollution etc. etc ....
