Perhaps, but the Japanese were also very nationalistic, and rather didn't like foreigners. So it is pretty amazing that they became, in such short order, one of the pillars of western democracy.

I've worked with Japanese for a decade + and one thing that I find interesting is that for a people with such a strong cultural bias, their businessmen are so into western dress (suits) and golf. Just odd. Perhaps that says something about why they did adopt western democracy as well. They know something good when they see it???
