I won't try to get my arms around all your rambling, . . .

I don't disagree with any of the notions in this post, Dale.

Two further comments. The first is that the hard time I have working with the right/left cut in domestic policy stuff is still much harder when it comes to foreign policy. Bush's policies can hardly be called classic old line conservative foreign policy; nor could Clinton's be called classic old line liberal.

The second is that I suspect the problem for the Dems is less about finding policies than about convincing the American public. There is little doubt the Reps, knowing it's their best card, will try to play the "you are with us or against us" meme as frequently as possible. And, given their success with the Swiftboats strategy last time around, we will be blessed with a great deal more of it.

But invading Iraq, torture, rendition and endrunning the Constitution were both unnecessary and dangerous to our security and our democracy.

The operative word there is "were." The Dems have a problem in that they wouldn't have done those things and fault those who did, which is fine as far as it goes, but now is not then. We can't get a do-over. So they need a plan for getting from where we are now to where they would like to see us.

Up until now they've been focused on what they wouldn't have done and what a mess was made. They can't or won't offer anythng on where we go from here. It's a very sticky place for them to be. I don't know if they can win either way.
