so to start a company in Detroit you have to be UAW? Why is that? it would seem like the knowledge base of car people is in Detroit just like the tech workers are in SV.

I agree the UAW is a boat anchor.

I heard on NPR the other night about this work furlough place in Detroit, it was set up in the 80s as a part of a contract with the UAW. When GM can't employ various workers, who make about $20 per hour with full benefits according to this piece, they get furloughed to this facility where they can either do community work or sit around and watch TV.

There are people who worked for GM for a year and have been in this "community service pool" for 15 years- and GM still pays them according the the UAW contract.

This is unacceptable, I am all for a fair wage and profitable companies paying into the US healthcare system and all, we can't have every company acting like Walmart. But otoh this is way too far the other way.
