I grew up in a union household and live in a union state but I don't think much of unions these days.

A long time ago when my husband was looking to get into construction he tried to join the carpenters union but he was frozen out, you had to know someone to get in. So he went to work for a non-union shop. An old friend of his worked union and it was interesting to see their two careers, whenever the friend was laid off (a common occurance in the winter for a carpenter) he'd get paid to hang around the union hall. John would get laid off and then go do a few jobs on his own or we'd take our vacation. Over the years John got better than union scale wages, was offered some of the same benefits his union buddies got and because he worked more, his lifetime earnings were significantly higher than his union buddies. The company he worked for had little trouble attracting good workers and winning bids. This pissed off the union which has been in steady decline over the same period.

For the last five years the union has been terrorizing and threatening the workers and ownership of the company my husband works for, trying to force them to go union. The company had to finally go to court to get them to stop harassing the employees and their customers. These guys perjured themselves in court making crap up so they weren't able to get them to back off. Basically they managed to ruin any chance they might have had of winning over the workers at my husband's company. They acted like a bunch of thugs.

we can't have every company acting like Walmart

I made a post about Walmart the other day....since I live in the state with the "Walmart Bill".
