"I see some people telling us that we have to get out and set the Iraqis loose upon one another in order to create a dominate power center that creates social order,"

No one wants this but at some point we may have to leave and this may be the outcome--like it or not.

Your looking in the wrong direction for mistakes. As I have pointed out before, and will do once more, our mistakes in Iraq are more along the lines of what would happen if gay rights folks forcibly took control of the Southern Baptists in the USA in order to bring equal treatment of gays to that organization via a gun barrel. Or choose feminists and equal treatment of women within the same organization if you prefer. Not likely to succeed.

Same problem we face with using a gun barrel to stuff American democracy down some unwilling throats. And yes, we bare much responsibility for having tried.

You might look at the recent comments from the Iraqi PM regarding our views and their views of democracy for a hint of whats to come.

If they have a civil war, it'll make Saddam's mass graves look very small by comparison.
