"That's interesting.........its rise coincides with the rise of fundamentalist Islam. Its as if this whole thing has been staged." Fundamentalism has been gaining a lot of ground across the globe. Inflexibility and intolerance can be empowering to those who feel they have no control. By narrowing choices, it makes a lot of people more comfortable. The lack of flexibility, though, is a problem when there are changes in the world. More often than not, they either have to hide from those changes, like Islam has been doing the past few centuries, or they break.
