Wow! Macy's of the North going American! I never thought I'd see the day. Spokane House, a Hudson's Bay outpost founded in 1804 (or thereabouts) is situated about five miles from my house. It was the first white settlement in what is now the state of Washington. Fort Connah, near St. Igatius Montana, is another HBC outpost from the fur trade. As was Ft. Hall several hundred miles south in Idaho. HBC is a very old company, maybe one of the oldest in the world? Beretta might be older. They make pistols used by the US Army.

I just discovered your thread. An excellent subject. During my canoeing days in Canada, we would occasionally come across a Hudson's Bay Company store when passing through an Indian village (very few of which had roads connecting them to the outside world). The stores did not stock a wide selection of goods and everything cost a small fortune. SPAM was a stable. This may sound silly, but we would enter the stores with a sense of awe, cognizant of how important the HBC was to the exploration and economic development of Canada. In its prime, the HBC was one of the great North American companies. A lot of our canoe trips traced old HBC fur trade routes. My best friend, who was 19 when we made the first trip, ended up basing a good chunk of his doctoral dissertation on the research that we did for some of the trips. His book is still in print. I proofed the manuscript and typed the original draft (back in the days before I had access to word processing). The only section I did not proof was the Acknowledgements. Ted managed to misspell Petersen. I also took his picture for the inside jacket. He forgot to give me attribution for the photo. LOL amazon.com amazon.com amazon.com I also spent some time with Ted in the HBC archives, which at that time were located in Winnipeg. I was in charge of photocopying things for Ted. We would return from Canada with a treasure trove of books and no money. Are you familiar with the Beaver Magazine? It is a history magazine that was founded by HBC in 1920. historysociety.ca I have had a subscription for over 30 years, though I have to admit that I don't have the time to read them with any regularity. I keep up the subscription as a reminder of how much I enjoyed that period of my life.
