At what minimum net worth should one start to consider an umbrella policy?

I think this depends on your circumstances. Can you afford to start over with nothing after a lawsuit has bankrupted you?

Clearly if you are 60 and your life savings have been just wiped out, that would be hard.

If you are 30 and have only $50k in savings, perhaps living without an Umbrella policy is not that big of a risk.

At some place in between, your sense of caution should direct you toward purchasing Umbrella coverage.

Hi L2S, am not knowledgeable on the minimum threshold level, which I believe would be determined more according to Eloy's earlier post about using it as a strategy to lower your overall insurance rate for threshold amounts.

They are very inexpensive - you should get one. I bought mine many years ago and have kept with the same provider, so don't know too much about today's market. One really important thing to remember though, is to upgrade your policy every so often to a higher amount - this is something many people unfortunately forget to do until it's too late according to my agent.

The bottom-line is: people in this country tend to blame (thus sue) others for their own mistakes, rather than take accountability for their own actions, so you have to protect yourself in such a litigious society.
