sandintoes, I never had that problem with riding the Amtrak, only the wildly unreliable ETAs. I have been given to understand that everything, particularly freight trains, have the right of way over the passenger trains. It has been my experience that Amtrak trains stop out in the middle of no where and for nothing.

I know the last time I took a train it was from Martinez, California (a few miles north of Berkeley), to Los Angeles, and it took 18 hours. That same trip would have taken 7 hours in an automobile, with stops for lunch and gasoline and staying within the speed limit. Still, it was a fun trip. I'd do it again. - Holly
