The Military Police don't function most of the time outside of military bases. They guard those bases and police servicemen in the rest of the community. Not the same job as preventing an attack by civilians on an American city. That does not diminish the fact that they do provide security. Different sort of security. Their job is not to prevent attacks against US civilians. The various components of our intelligence services and armed forces are suppsed to be talking to each other (not that they necessarily do it effectively, even in the post-9/11 environment) "Supposed to be", yes. 911 is an example of just how well this works without an overriding threat. These guys normally spend much of their time on budget and turf wars. And we pay the price. Having an a foreign organization whose members you cannot investigate and choose is NOT going to help this situation. One or 2 more incidents like 911 and they and you WILL have a war going. Are you saying the USCG needs to have an intelligence function in order to provide Port security? Absolutely. They cannot stop and inspect every ship as soon as it enters US territorial waters. There are too many ships and too few of them. They need to be told particular vessels are particularly suspicious for one reason or another and should be stopped ASAP and inspected or ordered to turn back under penalty of force. As a police force, they only react to crimes already committed. And a few more 911s and the Emirates and you will get your war.
