Your whatif question is on par with the following: If the individuals that molested the alter boys in the church were called homosexuals (these were same sex after all) would the media have been to quick to call for lynchings?

That those individuals got significantly lesser sentences than most people charged with the same offense, and had considerable sympathy from their employers and from almost everyone involved shows the reality of your supposition. The idea that Rapists got lesser sentences because of their life of good works, and were protected from criminal prosecution by their superiors also points to the validity of your comparison. I believe the total is something like thousands of children raped by hundreds of priests, and most of those priests didn't spend time in prison. They should have spent the rest of their lives in prison, they were after all rapists and child molesters.
