Michael, it was a stretch to call attacking Iraq "self-defence". It was defence of interests and consolidation of power, which is quite a different thing.

Which country stopped protecting itself but the USA did it for them? Lets stick to the last quarter century rather than rehash Vietnam and Korea. Time is moving on. Quite quickly really.

East Timor and Tibet gave up. Oh, wait, East Timor was conquered with the agreement of Henry Kissinger and the USA. Come to think of it, the USA gave the green light to Saddam to head into Kuwait when he had his tanks lined up ready to go and he asked April Glaspie what the USA thought of the idea. Silly boy fell for the trick.

Kuwait didn't "give up protecting itself", it was attacked on the go ahead say so of the USA.
