The Iraqis have already asked us to leave, provide a time table, and the WH has refused. In its stead, the WH appears to be backing off anyway which could mean a jumbled retreat instead of a rational withdrawal.

The Shiites are doing their own mass executions and revenge killings. It's not a one-sided argument. Iraq is such a violent mess that anyone could be doing anything and no one will ever know the truth. There is no rule of law and no justice and the people there know it. It is a hideous kind of life courtesy of the Bush administration.

The Kurds have wanted their independence for years and they see a once in a millenium opportunity for both independence and great wealth from the northern oil fields. Would you give that up for a tiny piece of the mess down south?

Ditto the Shiites and the southern oil fields and the kind of life that some or many of them want. They don't want a secular government but a fundamentalist one. Why they wish for that is beyond my undertanding but that's what they appear to be fighting for.

Therefore, the three groups wish for very different things. They are obviously willing to fight to get what they want and the US is unable to wield enough power to make them stop.

It is a gargantuan mess and we're footing an enormous bill (aka transfer of wealth) that we cannot pay. The American Revolution bankrupted the French Monarchy. There's nothing that says a foreign war can't do the same to us.

This entire mess is very, very dangerous....for us.
