Saddam had the most pro-women rights out of all the Arabic ME countries. Women were part of the leadership - they were lawyers, doctors, etc. Now women can't even shop. And the extremists are taking over, making it much worse for women. Iraq wasn't ready for Democracy.

Women in Iraq had substantially more rights than they do now.

Everyone under a dictatorship has zero "rights". Maybe you mean their lives were easier, opportunities were greater or something else. But what Iraqis had under Saddam cannot be described as "rights", other than the right to shut up unless ordered to speak by their interrogator.

Under Saddam, the country was more secular and that meant that Iraqi women had more equality with men, and hence, more rights. I am not saying that life was grand for women or that they were treated as equals to men, but they did have more rights.

In fact, Iraq like Iran had some of the best educated women in the ME.....that's changing now esp. in the Shia areas of Iraq.
