re: My claim is that Conroe isn't [bandwidth] choked here

For single core operation, no. For desktop dual core, it starts to limit performance. For quad-core, forget about it. Ditto 2 and 4 socket dual-core servers.

On the overall question as to whether Conroe will hurt AMD or rescue Intel, I agree with Albert K -- it really is too soon to tell! Here's why:
1) On what benchmarks does Conroe have an advantage over AMD's current (non-overclocked) parts and what is the extent of that advantage? The uncertainty is based on BIOS/driver/setup issues and the extremely small sample of mostly single-core benchmarks. Why didn't they at least throw in MM Content Creation or something?
2) When will Conroe & its chipsets be available in quantity? July is one thing. October is another. If OEMs are not totally convinced by mid October, they won't build 'em for Christmas.
3) How much performance boost will AMD get near-term from Rev F and the 3 new sockets. (I'm wondering now whether the claim by Charlie of a 20% performance boost for Rev F is actually based on the very same benchmarks Intel is using.)
4) Will 65nm shrink of Rev F have higher clock speed? (possibly out about the same time as Conroe.)
5) How long will Conroe be available before K8L? The lead, if there is one, might evaporate in a few months. I would predict that a solid 10% overall performance lead for 3 months would not reduce AMD's market share by 1 point. (Remember how AMD's market share barely budged for a year and a half after Opteron and Athlon 64 were intro'd.)
