Saddam and OBL are unique, recognizable targets (although the Iranian leader who denies the Holocaust is now somewhat recognizable)." It doesn't matter how recognizable they are. In order to hit your enemy with a guided missile from 1000 miles away, you need to know the building that they, and their subhuman thugs, are in. OBL and Saddam were constantly on the move. The criminally insane leaders of Iran are all in one or two buildings at the same time. You also said: "Israel's targeting of Hamas and other terror leaders has not had the desired effect. Other leaders have risen, the goals of the organizations have not changed, and the strikes have in fact fomented their followers." Other leaders have risen, but they are mostly in hiding and ineffectual. Since Israel took out some of Hamas's leaders, and the leaders of the other inhuman terrorist groups, the successful attacks against Israel are significantly fewer. More bombs are blowing up in the hands of the terrorists, instead of in Jewish schools and restaurants. Targeted killings of the leaders of the terrorist groups, and of their explosive experts has saved many Jewish lives. There are still many attempted attacks, and threats, against Israel every day, but few of them succeed. You also said: "In the end, I believe such action hurts moderates and helps radicals." Israel's targeted killings has been an unqualified success. Perhaps, in the end, as you say, the targeted killings might backfire, but the immediate goal is to save life and limbs right now. As for Iran...... I think that it is worth the effort to take out the nuts in charge of the country before they are able to effect massive death and destruction in the US or elsewhere.
