You can take the way Iraq was a few months back, look at it now, see that it is worse, and consider this negative change a trend that will be durable. Possibly you would be correct but its far from certain. Whether the current situation is "a big step back" before future steps forward or a big step back that will be followed by continuing steps back hasn't been determined yet. I think things will get better, but I wouldn't call those who disagree irrational. I could certainly see how they could get worse.
