Kevin Rose, you said: "Do you have evidence that targeted attacks on leaders are effective? I suppose hitting a master bombbuilder would have a short term effect, but they always seem to have someone else ready to step up to the plate."

A targeted killing of Iran's religious leaders would have been much more effective in Iran when the "elected" government was mostly moderate. It would have been one of the greatest and most effective moves for peace ever. The moderates would have taken over. It might still work.

As far as Israel goes...... Israel is a different situation. Muslim terrorists have been attacking Israel for over 60 years. Arab nations have waged full scale wars against the Jews of Israel five time. If Israel had lost just one of those wars, most Jews would have been murdered.

Israel fights an active war against terrorists every day. Israel has to strike the bomb builders and the terrorist planners before the terrorists strike Israel.

Israel's actions are somewhat limited. They can either allow the terrorist leaders to openly and freely plan attacks against Jewish families, or Israel can strike first, take out the terrorist leaders before the terrorists can complete their plans, and at the same time, force these terrorist leaders into hiding so that they are less likely to plan a successful attack.

It's working. Since the start of Israel actively targeting terrorist leaders, there have been a significant decrease in successful terrorist attacks.

In other words, the proof is in the pudding.

This was the first reference I found on the subject. Here is an excerpt from a Foxnews article - March 23, 2004:

foxnews.com

"Hamas might have trouble carrying out a large-scale attack, in part because Israel has become more effective in stopping bombers.

The number of homicide bombings and the number of victims has dropped, with 142 Israelis killed in 22 bombings in 2003, compared to 214 killed in 53 bombings in 2002. Analysts attributed the drop to Israel's partially built West Bank barrier, beefed-up intelligence and Hamas leaders' fear of assassination."
