ugly is ugly.

lipstick doodads aren't going to help

bigger aesthetic problem is big box stores have hollowed out downtowns across the country and contributed to urban sprawl that looks the same wherever you travel

Anybody eaten in an Applebury's or stayed at an Econolodge lately? Name a chain. Stay or eat in one and you could be anywhere in the country.

Liberals seek diversity in population, and push for conformity in thought and architecture.

but who cares about aesthetics when dollars are at stake

Gawd, I'm sounding like a latte sipping, Davide Brooks' bobo

Alaska had a rule by which all public buildings were required to have a percentage of the total budget devoted to art embellishments. Some of the results were very worthwhile. Kmart had two totems. A middle school had brass art medallions depicting native symbols. The courthouse had a life size grizzly bear bronze. The bear replaced Nimbus, after a terrible controversy of the you either "love it or hate it" variety.

You can probably see why if you look about halfway down in this pdf document. The sculpture reminds me of the aftermath of a trainwreck. heritagepreservation.org!UpFall02.pdf

I thought some of the examples in your links were pretty interesting. A couple looked like they were imitating Afghan adobe architecture.
