Alaska had a rule by which all public buildings were required to have a percentage of the total budget devoted to art embellishments. Some of the results were very worthwhile. Kmart had two totems. A middle school had brass art medallions depicting native symbols. The courthouse had a life size grizzly bear bronze. The bear replaced Nimbus, after a terrible controversy of the you either "love it or hate it" variety. You can probably see why if you look about halfway down in this pdf document. A couple looked like they were imitating Afghan adobe architecture.
