For mid to high end servers, a 50% price cut on the CPU will not influence the final purchase decision.

Cutting prices on the server CPU's- where AMD is reported to be gaining share like gangbusters will not help Intel very much.

I agree and is why I my previous discussions were primarily to desktop CPUs, the 8xx and 9xx series in particular.

In desktops and mobil's, Intel's prices are already 50% higher than AMD's and with AMD at capacity- I just don't see AMD responding in kind to INtel's desperate measures.

I have stated much the same in my posts as well.

What is really amazing about all this price war stuff, why is there an article on the Inquirer about raising prices on X2s.

theinquirer.net

"That's according to AMD Board, which said even though the chips are likely to be launched at Computex, resellers have been informed of the rises."

"I just don't see AMD responding in kind to INtel's desperate measures."

Although it could limit market share gains in Q2 and Q3 with Fab36 coming online. However, it will also limit profits at Intel through mid-next year or so.

TechieGuy-alt, on this quarter

Not to mention that in this and the next quarter, AMD *should* be building up inventory for Q3 and Q4.

If anything, a slight reduction in buying pressure could be helpful to AMD. As long as it has no effect on the ASPs, which is what we're seeing in recent reports.
