If a civilization has achieved the technology to get here, they have already achieved the technology to obviate any need for observation. If one can travel the galaxy, there's so much out there that "they have already visited lots of worlds just like us".

they are bored with the whole thing.

Not boredom because they can have fun with us through things like Crop Circles which are allowed under the Prime Directive. It's like playing with a pet ape.

Would an advance alien get in its space mobile and drive here? Or is it more likely they'd open a wormhole and look over your shoulder.

Just set up an inverse tachyon beam routed through your forward array, launch an anti-matter spread and you will be able to detect it.
