BTW, a friend of mine just got a Turion based HP dv8110us (8000 series with 17" screen). For his usage, I recommended this configuration, which is on the low end of the spectrum.

Anyway, I saw the notebook this weekend, and it is an amazing bargain. Staples has this in stock at some stores (not always on display) or it can be ordered online for less than $1,000.

Re: You are right about the today part. I was just looking at year. But it is still amazing how little progress Intel made in all this time.

Intel has punished the low end buyers since the introduction of the P4 Celeron. While Durons, Semprons and PII/PIII Celerons performed well for budget desktops Intel's P4 Celeron and 533MHz FSB Prescotts haven't offered much bang for the buck.

I do like what Intel has tried to do with the Intel 805. If it weren't for the high power draw I would probably buy one just for kicks, just like I'd buy a 1.4GHz dual-core Sempron for the same price.

This whole fiasco is trying. Still, it is pretty funny to see Intel slashing prices to stem market share erosion.

I have to go back to the basic argument, ~"even with cuts they are still over priced". The word is getting out. AMD is way strong at retail.

The cuts should let corporate folks buy cheaper.

They payed a premium, in part for the Intel name. Intel just devalued the name on that box.
