>>The real debate in Democratic circles would be whether to pass articles of IMPEACHment.<<

Almost all the Democrats (outside of Feingold and a few others) basically supported the war in Iraq and the initial Patriot Act so I find this talk of impeachment somewhat hypocritical.

Bush cannot advance the Iraq situation, because that would take more than double the US forces presently there. He cannot stay in Iraq because the force now there is being steadily ground down by the ever more ferocious Iraqi resistance. He cannot even retreat militarily because that would signal to the American people that he had made a gigantic blunder which would destroy his presidency.

The Democrats need a gain of six seats to win back control of the Senate and 15 seats to retake the House. A loss of either House would cripple Congress but it would also cripple the Bush Administration in getting its own legislation through. A loss of both Houses would be catastrophic for President Bush. He would then face two years of investigations over his Iraq enterprise.

The stock market is surely not taking this talk of impeachment seriously- at least not yet. It's just another "wall of worry" here for the market to overcome. But if the Reupublicans lose control of the House and Senate, that "wall" may become insurmountable.
