To my mind, custom has a lot to do with the practice of marriage. I do not see how you can introduce same-sex marriage, a complete innovation, never before practiced even in societies that accepted homosexuality, while banning polygamy, a custom thousands of years old and still widely practiced.

but the other answer will totally destroy "marriage."

Hm. Isn't the tradition* of slavery older than the tradition of marriage? Maybe losing "marriage" won't be such a Bad Thing. A Civil War or two and we'll be done with it.

*(Or custom, or "activity," or "intrinsic state that 'occupies a deeper level of human consciousness'" [-Krauthammer/Sullivan], or whatever.)
