There is a growing segment out there that I have called the "purples". They're disenchanted democrats and republicans who are feed up with the extremes of their respective parties -- the looney liberals and the howling religious rightous. I'm afraid this year's elections are to close for this group to coalesce. And unless something dramatic happens (market or Iraq), the GOP stands a good chance to loose at least one of two battles. The candidate that focuses on this new group will be the one who goes home the winner in 2008.
