China would be wise to blink. Another small devaluation will placate the politicians for another year at least. It's a hell of a lot smarter than a 27% tariff and all out trade war.

Even if China doesn't blink, I don't see how that's a benefit for gold. I think the dollar gains strength and gold goes down for the next few months.

Economy could withstand sharp dollar drop: Bernanke

today.reuters.com

<snip>

The chronic U.S. trade gap need not fuel a "precipitous" decline in the dollar, but the economy may be able to shrug it off if it did, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Tuesday.

"Although U.S. trade deficits cannot continue to widen forever, these deficits need not engender a precipitous decline in the dollar, nor should such a decline, were it to occur, necessarily disrupt financial markets, production or employment," Bernanke said in a letter to Rep. Brad Sherman, a California Democrat.

LOL!

Charles Mackay was spot on!

... trying to pick which month is good for gold is like trying to choose your favorite angel off the head of a pin...
... or, conversely, which seat in the titanic orchestra pit has the fluffiest cushion...

... some will never learn... thank goodness!

I am not sure what Schumer did back in 1986 to Japan, do you?

The Plaza Accord was in Schumer's backyard, not Japan. In either case, whatever Japan did in 1986 was probably not too good for Japan, soon leading to 10+ years of deflation. So if Schumer is trying to do unto China whatever he did to Japan, do you suppose China will welcome him with open arms?
