I'm sure all the engineering problems have been addressed by some tech-savvy science fiction writer, but I can't say for sure since that's a genre I gave up on right around the time I reached puberty.

There's the ticket -- write a best-selling SF book about mining the asteroids. The advantage of writing SF is that you don't even need to try to create realistic characters speaking realistic dialogue.
