We ended up in a tie in Korea and lost the bulk of our soldiers (i think) fighting the chinese who didnt need to be fought at all. I am remembering here--not sure about the numbers as korea was before my time.

I think you're correct. But bear in mind that Russian and N. Korean pilots were flying north of the Yalu river, which effectively made them a combatant..

If they had restrained Kim Il Sung from invading the south, or encouraging him to make peace with the South once UN forces crossed into the north, a confrontation between the Chinese and UN would have been avoided.

But we weren't talking to the Chinese then. And we ignored the warnings they passed via the Indian Ambassador to China that they were preparing to intervene.

In the end, I think both sides came to regret their mutual mis-reading of the situation.
