You have missed the point. Every profession fosters mediocrity - that's just the way people are. Most people are average- and some people- God help them- are below average. What do companies do when they have units that aren't performing as well as they should? They generally throw some money at the problem, when cutting the division isn't an option.

Escalante was great, but an anomaly, and he also screened the kids in his classes.

The NBA might get rid of mediocrity - but basketball is a bit bigger than the NBA- you clearly misunderstood my metaphor. It encompasses high school, and colleges. I'm sure there are some school districts in California that are equivalent to the NBA (Atherton comes to mind) but just as the NBA does not equal all basketball, Atherton school district does not equal all California schools.
