I don't know the ins and outs of when and why Immigration locks up illegals vs. letting them go.

BTW -- I was just reading the various proposals on reforming immigration law, and I like this one the best:

>>The McCain-Kennedy proposal. The Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act was sponsored by Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA), with support from several key congressmen. The proposal would:

* Grant three-year, renewable work visas to illegal immigrants for a $1000 fee.
* After six years of working legally, immigrants can pay another $1000 and apply for permanent work status if they haven't broken any laws and have studied English.
* Potential immigrants could apply for a $500 work visa if they can prove there is a job waiting for them.

If the point of reforming the law is merely to prevent lawbreaking, then it is a not unreasonable proposal.

Obviously if the point is to reduce the number of immigrants, period, it won't serve that purpose.

I am looking for polls but my sense is that only a portion of Republicans are die-hard anti-immigration, and that most Democrats and many Republicans favor worker visas for illegals.
