Yes, the general assumption that more government funding is the solution to most evils in society. You are correct that blanket assertions along those lines also shut off debate - most blanket assertions do when we are dealing with complex problems in real life.

You would think that more money should equal more security just because we throw more manpower, weapons and equipment at a problem. But then we have an emergency like Katrina and the new Goliath is suddenly tripping all over itself like a drunken sailor.

The huge disconnect in Congress is each side ripping the other for spending too little on something "vital" (security, education, Medicare, whatever) then pontificating about government waste with equal fervor when the money is spent on something they don't like.

We need a panel like they used for closing military bases - they draw up one list of cuts that hurts everyone equally and it gets voted on straight up or down, no lobbyists allowed to tamper with it.
