Local thing I saw in the paper.

In 1986, the state of Illinois adopted the Safe Drinking Water Act. While I'm all in favor of clean water - heck, I'm a Democrat - the city has gone with a "Cross Connection Control Device Program" for just commercial buildings, for now, that is void of all common sense. The city is worried that we are going to somehow contaminate the city water with city water. So they want all businesses to install "back-flow devices" on water heaters and faucets that can have hoses hooked to them.

First, you have to pay for an inspection. Mine was $140. I was told that I needed a "back-flow valve" on my 5-gallon water heater.

So, I bought one - $40 - and installed it myself. I informed the city that I had completed this work and I got a letter saying that I had to hire a licensed plumber to redo the work or be fined $100 to $500 per day. I then decided that I didn't even need a water heater just to wash my hands, so I took it out and told the city that the city water lines were safe because I no longer had a water heater in my shop. Well, now I really did it. I was told that my building was unfit for occupancy and they were going to shut my water off and if I was caught working in my building I would be arrested.

Well folks, it was then that I realized that you can't fight "city hall" so I called a licensed plumber to put me into compliance with the "Safe Drinking Water Act."
