If you're looking for wisdom from Rome, I think you would be better served by Marcus Aurelius.

Although he made a great error in securing succession as Emperor for his son Commodus.

Its for this reason that most historians date the decline of the Pax Romana with the death of Marcus Aurelius.

It is hypocritical from our modern perspective, but an ancient Greek, Roman, or Byzantine would not have seen any incongruity.
