I think that the analysts were wrong about vista being a threat to google. How can a client side experience beat up on the best web searching experience in the world?

It wasn't named Vista then - and Longhorn (WinFS) has been a dream in my eyes for many years, and not something that would make sense in the way it was originally proposed (remember Cairo?).

Microsoft has made many bad decisions on their way, like introducing the registry concept. Adding access controls to the registry definitely didn't make things better, and the whole complexity of security on Windows is awful. A file system based on a database server, or a real, extendable object oriented filesystem would be just another such decision. It would certainly generate a lot of turnover in companies that deliver support on it, but it surely also converts a lot of customers to the competition, and it would boost hardware sales a lot.

I believe that the Longhorn stop wasn't about technology, but about economics. Management didn't realize, what WinFS would mean for the final product, until 2004. Then suddenly they found out.

I don't consider Bill Gates to be extremely smart. He should step aside as chief architect and let Anders Hejlsberg replace him. But I'm not sure that Anders would accept that offer.
