Bush does want to expand the power of the president, that's obvious- but then a lot of presidents want to do that while they are president. I agree Bush is a bit careless about spying on US citizens, although not being privy to all the facts I don't know just how careless he has been. If the congress changes hands I suspect we will see hearings on it in which the truth, or something like it, would come out. I would find that healthy- other people, who are comfortable with the domestic spying programs would not find it healthy. I agree the budget is out of hand, and I agree that the accountability for the billions spent in Iraq is problematic, and I am deeply distressed by the money we have spent there. The data on the fixing of elections is mixed. I don't know what to believe. I do find some of the problems I have read about suspicious, but at the moment nothing more than suspicious. If there has been a conspiracy I have some confidence it will come out, because conspiracies are hard to protect. Until I have good data, I will remain skeptical- I'm not a conspiracy lover. I agree freedom of speech is being attacked, mostly by propaganda- and I really detest the "people who don't support my policy are weakening the country" line of argument. That pretty much eliminates a loyal opposition if followed to its logical conclusion, so we agree there. I find the free speech zones ridiculous, in terms of Bush's "public" appearances- but intelligent people can disagree on that, depending on how much decorum they want in public events, balanced against how deleterious to free speech they see the fencing into free speech zones (and out of the area of the actual Bush appearance) of protestors to be. The press, imo, has weakened itself, and I'm very disappointed in what lap dogs they have been during this administration. I agree that this is a secretive administration, but I am also annoyed with the press generally for not being agressive enough in investigating really important matters- and for God's sake, let's HAMMER away at the spending, the pork, the deficit- I find those issues really desperately important, and they affect us all. It's much more important than other sexier stories that get more coverage. Of course those sexy stories get coverage because those stories are what many people want, so maybe we should also blame the news consumers for weakening the news. If the people of the US wanted their news to look more like the News Hour it probably would- but it's pretty clear they don't want that. I've tried to address your points. I wish I could add a little more, but I've got to go. I'll be happy to pick this up tomorrow if you want to.
