In VA it's called standing - i.e. waiting in lift lines - though you get to do much more of that in NC. At least that was the case way back when I used to ski there 20+ years ago.

I quit the NC areas when I discovered Wintergreen, near Charlottesville. Nice area with more trails and more reliable conditions, though the vertical is no better, than NC. They pissed me off, though, when they created a special lift line for condo/home owners and gave them priority over day skiers. You'd often wait a good 45 minutes for the short ride back up the <1000' vertical.

OTOH, an hour or more was standard on weekends in NC. Haven't been back to either since the '80s.

The best in the SE, BTW, is probably Snowshoe in WV. Hard as heck to get to, though.
