I think this is a regional thing- in the West barbecue is synonymous with grilling (as you will see it can be in the dictionary- see def #2, which would be grilling in KY, but is barbecuing here in Calif.)

Back East, in Ky, Barbecuing is not synonymous with grilling. But to use barbecue as grill is perfectly acceptable, though it may confuse people who define things in a purely regional way. So it would be better to use both words, imo:
