I started studying Spanish and Latin in high school. Added French and German in college. Tried Slovak and Japanese as an adult. I don't know how much of my problem was the increased difficulty of the languages and how much was age but by the time I got to Japanese (my forties)--hopeless. I won't attempt another.

I had a odd communication problem a few weeks ago. I called the maid service and the woman who responded had pretty good English but couldn't get my last name. I said it once, spelled it three times, and she still didn't get it. So I spelled it in Spanish and got through to her immediately. She thanked me. In English. Odd.

a big influx of immigrants might restore a respect for multilingualism

I don't know if I would want multilingualism restored. It's really a lot easier when the whole world speaks the same language. Since we're nearly there, I'm for pressing for closure on that.
