Just to be precise, I specifically said "a respect for multilingualism" which I find lacking among most native-born Americans nowadays. Foreign language proficiency past high school is virtually unknown, and the high school students don't get far to begin with. I love the rich variety and texture of different languages around the world. They express so much about various cultures. I would hate to see that rubbed out into a single WalMart view of the world, every place exactly alike. That would be easier, but so would eating the same sandwich for every meal.
