It would have been far better for some people in the aftermath of 1918 to have understood that Nazism could even arise, and what might be done to have prevented it. Thats the real point.

Of course. But what does history indicate to us would have been the appropriate resolution?

I would suggest that, aside from immediately doing away with the reparations from WWI, the German people should have been made immediately aware of the consequences that would face them should they elect the Nazis to power. We also should have promoted assistance to the Wiemar Republic, despite our own problems of the great depression.

And it's likely the German people would not have had the stomach, at that time, to set themselves on a course of military confrontation with the nations that devastated them previously.

We failed to do that. And as a result, they were permitted to re-ignite their militant and imperialist aspirations, which ultimately cost the world millions of human lives.

Of course, we didn't have the precedence to reflect upon that we do now.

What's truly amazing is that those who whine and wail over Hitler can't see the rise of American Fascism in their own backyard.
